AI Agents to Gain Independence as Economic Actors in Financial Networks
Anchorage Digital's CEO Nathan McCauley predicts that AI agents will become first-class economic actors, operating independently across financial networks. These systems would execute transactions directly through banking and payment infrastructure, going beyond advisory roles. The comments were made during the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium 2026.
According to McCauley, future AI agents will require infrastructure that allows interaction across crypto networks and traditional payment rails. He compared the concept to fictional digital assistants often portrayed in science fiction, but emphasized a practical financial infrastructure rather than speculative technology scenarios.
Anchorage Digital has already taken steps toward this vision with its Agentic Banking platform, launched in May. The platform provides governance, trust, and settlement tools designed for institutions deploying AI-driven financial services. The company also introduced a 'know-your-agent' framework to help institutions monitor and manage autonomous systems conducting financial activities.
McCauley argued that payment tools alone will not support the next generation of AI-powered commerce. Instead, agents will require broader banking capabilities to receive, hold, and spend funds independently. This would allow systems to operate more efficiently across different financial environments.
