AI Boom Loses Momentum as Wall Street Recovers
Wall Street saw some relief after a volatile week, but the effects of the AI investment narrative's potential cracks are still visible. The Dow Jones managed to recover from its drop of more than 0.75% in the week of July 18-25, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also showing signs of recovery.
The sell-off was largely driven by concerns that the AI investment thesis might be running out of steam. Nvidia and other AI chipmakers took a hit, with investors expressing frustration over the 'exhausting' narrative. The capital flowing into AI infrastructure this year has been staggering, with hyperscalers issuing $159 billion in bonds earlier in 2026.
Crypto markets also felt the impact of shifting investor sentiment, with Bitcoin's performance during this stretch being notably weak relative to historical seasonal patterns. Analysts attributed the underperformance partly to a broader reallocation of capital toward AI-focused investments. Ethereum drew more favorable attention from analysts, who compared it to pre-AWS Amazon or pre-AI Nvidia.
