AI-Boosted Attackers Threaten Digital Asset Security, Bitcoin Policy Institute Warns
Researchers at the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) have warned that advanced artificial intelligence systems could give attackers an edge over open-source defenders in securing digital assets.
The BPI analysts noted that modern AI models are already capable of analyzing large codebases, identifying potential vulnerabilities, and performing complex technical work. However, these capabilities may become available to malicious actors sooner than to open-source defenders, putting wallets, signing devices, cryptographic libraries, node software, asset custody systems, exchanges, and payment networks at risk.
The institute emphasized that digital assets are particularly vulnerable due to the ease with which attackers can convert access into financial losses. In an effort to address this issue, the BPI is urging AI developers to create or expand permanent trusted-access programs for qualified developers and researchers who defend open-source financial infrastructure.
