AI Credit Crisis Could Send BTC to $1M, Says Arthur Hayes
Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX and chief investment officer of Maelstrom, published a macro framework on February 17 arguing that AI-driven white-collar job losses will ignite an AI credit crisis severe enough to force the Federal Reserve into large-scale money printing. As a result, Bitcoin could reach $1 million.
Hayes frames two distinct scenarios and warns traders to keep leverage limited until the Fed shows its hand. He estimates that a 20% reduction in US knowledge workers would inflict approximately $330 billion in consumer credit losses and $227 billion in mortgage losses on commercial bank balance sheets.
The eight Too Big to Fail institutions are adequately capitalized, but thousands of smaller regional banks are not. Hayes notes that the distribution is the problem, as the market will identify the weakest balance sheets and spark depositor flight.
