Boltz, a Bitcoin bridge, shut down its swap service due to the increasing speed of AI-assisted attacks. The company's non-custodial design kept user funds safe, but the team couldn't keep pace with the accelerated exploits.
The attackers used automated probing, which led to several contained exploits before the attack accelerated sharply. Boltz absorbed the losses from exploits on its own books and decided that the swap product could no longer operate safely.
AI has given attackers an advantage in terms of speed and efficiency. Defenders must now automate their defensive chain, including confirmation, assessment, building, testing, and deployment of fixes.
The small team behind Boltz couldn't validate and patch vulnerabilities as quickly as the attackers could find and exploit them. This gap between well-funded defense and smaller teams is a significant challenge in the crypto industry.
