AI-Driven Attacks Grounds Boltz Non-Custodial Bridge

Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin bridge that enabled users to swap between Bitcoin's mainchain, the Lightning Network, and the Liquid sidechain, has indefinitely suspended its services due to AI-assisted attacks. The attacks began escalating in July and peaked just before the shutdown announcement on August 3.

The team behind Boltz described the situation as a 'major paradigm shift' for open-source Bitcoin services, implying that they don't expect a quick return. Despite containing the losses from exploits, the self-funded team absorbed significant financial blows, which will impact their operating budget.

Boltz's non-custodial architecture, built on hash time-locked contracts, protected user funds during the attacks, but the operational disruption is substantial. The shutdown affects wallets like Aqua and Bull Bitcoin, which integrated Boltz's swap functionality for seamless transactions between Lightning and Liquid.
