AI-Driven Financial Privacy Risks Fuel Demand for Zcash
Grayscale's latest commentary suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could fuel a third wave of demand for financial privacy. The firm's Head of Research, Zach Pandl, believes AI-driven analysis tools will connect public blockchain transactions with off-chain information, raising concerns about user anonymity. This development is seen as an opportunity for Zcash to gain traction in the market.
Pandl noted that mainstream privacy concerns have intensified during significant technological advancements: the computerization of financial records in the 1970s and the expansion of the internet in the 1990s. He stated, 'For users that prioritize privacy, this could become a 'must have' feature.'
Grayscale's analysis follows their earlier valuation scenarios for ZEC, which have risen roughly 19-fold over the past year but remain below 1% of Bitcoin's market capitalization as of August 29. The firm's central claim remains a forecast about Zcash's relevance rather than evidence that AI has already increased shielded transaction use.
US agencies have identified AI-driven re-identification risks, with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) stating that AI creates new re-identification risks. A separate U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report published in March compiled privacy risks named by an expert panel it convened, including AI cross-referencing seemingly independent data sets to re-identify anonymized information.
