AI-Driven Investment Scams Sweep Australia, Leaving Trail of Financial Ruin

Share

A Queensland man made significant profits from a cryptocurrency trading app after downloading it and linking it to his crypto wallet. However, he soon discovered that unauthorised transfers were flowing from his account, resulting in losses of over $166,000.

Experts say AI is making investment scams more sophisticated, with 'scam ecosystems' being deployed at scale. These systems use hyper-realistic media, fake news articles, and synthetic reviews to deceive victims.

Australia has seen significant losses due to fraudulent investment schemes in 2025 and 2026, with over $45m lost so far this year. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) deactivated nearly 12,000 scam websites last year, but scammers frequently bypass removal using 'cloaking' technology.

Regulators are struggling to keep up with these scams, which often involve AI-generated investment opportunities offering access to a 'financial adviser' with an Australian or English accent. Digital platforms share responsibility for hosting and distributing advertisements that may be scams.
