Blockchain security is facing a new and increasingly sophisticated threat from AI-driven scams.

Solana Foundation CISO Michael Coates warned that recent major security incidents began with breaches involving fake identities and AI-based scams, rather than smart-contract vulnerabilities.

Coates noted that advances in artificial intelligence are driving a rise in sophisticated phishing and identity fraud, making social engineering attacks more dangerous. These schemes approach victims directly to steal sensitive information such as private keys and seed phrases.

Examples of these threats include romance scams and pig-butchering scams, where AI-generated content is used to deceive users.

Coates emphasized the importance of layered security systems in preventing losses from social engineering attacks. He also stated that it's unrealistic for users to identify every scam perfectly, making additional safeguards necessary to prevent theft.
