AI-Generated Bots Flood Crypto Platforms: Proof of Personhood Takes Center Stage

The crypto space is grappling with a pressing issue: AI-generated bots are flooding Web3 platforms, making it difficult to distinguish between real humans and fake identities.

This problem has been dubbed the 'sybil attack,' which refers to a situation where one person creates multiple fake identities to exploit systems designed for unique individuals. The sybil attack is not new, but its scale has increased exponentially with the rise of AI agents that can create wallets, fund them, and interact with protocols with minimal human oversight.

Proof of personhood is an emerging solution that aims to verify a user's humanity without revealing their personal data. This cryptographic method uses biometrics such as iris scans, palm prints, or facial recognition to create a unique credential that can be verified by any system without trusting a central authority.

Two leading projects, Worldcoin and Humanity Protocol, are already implementing proof of personhood using different approaches. Worldcoin uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify iris scans, while Humanity Protocol relies on palm-vein scanning and decentralized identifiers (DIDs) with verifiable credentials (VCs).
