AI-Generated Threats Force Core Lightning Upgrade or Shutdown

Core Lightning, a key implementation of Bitcoin's Lightning Network, has instructed its node operators to either upgrade immediately or shut down their nodes due to artificial-intelligence-generated vulnerability reports. This warning follows a surge in AI-assisted audits across open-source projects, including the volunteer Bitcoin Red Team.

The team flagged the issue on August 13, stating that they had received multiple AI-generated CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) reports over the past 10 days and were working to triage them with outside contributors. Core Lightning is maintained by Blockstream.

Node operators who fail to upgrade or shut down their nodes risk exposing their channels to potential exploits, which could result in forced-closure or fund loss. Payments routed through affected channels may also experience liquidity disruptions.
