AI Giants Unite: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind Form Safety Standards Alliance
Three of the most influential companies in AI research - OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind - have started collaborating to establish industry-wide safety standards for advanced models. The initiative, proposed by Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, on July 14, 2026, aims to create a US-led standards organization modeled after FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority).
The collaboration centers around several key areas: shared technical evaluations, pre-release audits of advanced models, independent testing frameworks, and standardized safety protocols. The three companies have been meeting regularly since mid-September to discuss the details of these measures.
OpenAI's chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, has also reinforced the importance of common safety requirements in an essay published on September 6, 2026. He called for a uniform approach across the AI sector to ensure that all companies adhere to the same standards.
The partnership builds on the foundation laid by the 2024 Frontier Model Forum, which included Microsoft alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. The current trio has opted out of Nvidia's Open Secure AI Alliance, which launched in July 2026 with over 30 firms focused on open-source AI security tools.
