AI Hedge Fund Collapse Exposes Bitcoin as First Sell
A $20 billion AI hedge fund called Situational Awareness collapsed in July after gaining 439% through June. The fund's collapse offers a warning for Bitcoin, which is often sold quickly when Wall Street needs cash.
The fund was founded by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher who built the investment pitch around AI advancing fast enough to reshape industries such as energy, national security, and computing. The thesis worked initially, with Situational Awareness growing to manage roughly $20 billion.
However, in July, the fund lost about 67% of its value, and eventually sold most of its public-equity portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel for an estimated $16 billion. Reuters reported that it was unclear whether Situational received a formal margin call before the deal.
The fund's lenders only had to become uncomfortable with their exposure before the expected returns arrived, rather than the value of the assets themselves being disputed. This raises concerns about what happens when an AI loss creates a cash demand, but the assets that would be sold are difficult to move or unavailable until Wall Street reopens.
