AI Hedge Fund Collapse Highlights Wall Street's Leverage Problem
A $20 billion AI hedge fund called Situational Awareness, led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, gained 439% from the start of 2026 through June. It was one of Wall Street's most persuasive investment pitches, based on the thesis that artificial intelligence would reshape industries such as energy, national security, and computing.
The fund invested in chips, power, storage, data centers, and other infrastructure expected to support the AI boom. However, in July, it lost about 67% of its value, reducing its capital. To address this issue, Situational Awareness sold most of a $16 billion public-equity portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel.
The collapse offers a warning for Bitcoin: when Wall Street needs cash quickly, the first asset sold may not be the one that caused the loss but the one still trading. This is because leverage can put every investment on two different clocks, one measuring how long the idea needs to work and another measuring how long its financing can survive while prices move in the wrong direction.
