AI Hedge Fund Collapse Triggers Margin Calls and Leverage Risks
A $20 billion AI hedge fund called Situational Awareness gained 439% through June but lost roughly two-thirds of its value in July. The fund's rapid decline is a warning for Bitcoin, as it shows how Wall Street reacts to margin calls.
Situational Awareness was built by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher who believed AI would reshape energy, national security, and computing. The fund invested in companies supplying the future of AI, including chips, power, storage, data centers, and other infrastructure.
The fund's collapse highlights the risks of leverage in finance. Situational Awareness borrowed heavily to invest in its portfolio, which included $16 billion in public stocks that were eventually sold to Citadel for an undisclosed amount.
