AI Lease Announcements Lose Luster in Bitcoin Mining Industry
The phenomenon of AI-driven lease announcements in the bitcoin mining industry has become less impactful over time. TheEnergyMag analyzed 25 such deals from June 2024 to August 4, 2026 and found that while they are still significant, the market's reaction is milder than it used to be.
The analysis revealed a split between earlier and later announcements. The first eight agreements produced an average absolute close-to-close move of 24.1%, with a median of 14.8%. In contrast, the last eight deals saw a drop in stock movement, averaging 10.2% and mediating at 7.3%.
The annualized base-term revenue per contracted megawatt for colocation and build-to-suit leases increased from $1.67 million to $1.90 million over the same period. This indicates that contracts are getting fatter, but investors are no longer reacting with the same level of excitement as they once did.
The AI lease announcements used to have a transformative effect on companies' stock prices. For instance, when Core Scientific announced 200 MW of hosting contracts with CoreWeave in June 2024, its stock jumped 40.2%. However, more recent deals, such as TeraWulf's $19 billion, 401 MW lease with Anthropic and CleanSpark's $6.6 billion, 175 MW agreement, have seen smaller stock movements.
The increasing number of AI leases has led to a shift in investor behavior. With more deals being announced, the market is no longer impressed by just any announcement. Investors now demand more information, such as details about the tenant, investment-grade backstops, and revenue projections.
