AI-Powered Crypto Scams: A Growing Threat to the Industry
Solana Foundation's Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Michael Coates has sounded an alarm about the rising threat of AI-powered crypto scams. In a warning to the industry, Coates notes that social engineering tactics are becoming increasingly convincing due to advancements in artificial intelligence.
Coates, who previously worked as CISO at Twitter and led security efforts at Mozilla, points out that many recent crypto hacks have not been caused by weaknesses in blockchain code or smart contract bugs. Instead, they stem from compromised credentials and fake identities created using AI tools.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that mistakes in cryptocurrency transactions are often permanent, making convincing scams especially costly. Coates emphasizes that organizations need layered security to protect users and funds, as even careful individuals can fall victim to sophisticated cons.
