AI-Powered Surveillance Threatens Blockchain Anonymity
Grayscale Research has issued a warning about the increased risk of financial surveillance on transparent blockchains due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). The researchers argue that AI tools will improve the ability to link transactions with off-chain data, making it easier to de-anonymize addresses and compromising user privacy.
This is not the first time concerns have been raised about blockchain transparency. In the past, digitization of financial records in the 1970s and the rise of the internet in the 1990s also sparked worries about data protection. However, this new wave of AI-driven surveillance risks is seen as more significant.
Bitcoin (BTC) transactions are publicly visible by default, making users susceptible to surveillance. In contrast, Zcash (ZEC), a digital currency with additional privacy features, uses zero-knowledge cryptography to conceal sender and receiver addresses along with transfer amounts, similar to physical cash.
Zach Pandl, Grayscale's Head of Research, believes that AI will lead to new threats to financial privacy and may motivate the search for solutions like Zcash. Shielded Zcash transactions could become a 'must-have' feature for users prioritizing anonymity.
