AI Safety Concerns Spark Regulatory Fears for Top Tech Stocks
A former researcher at OpenAI and Anthropic, Jacob Coxon, has sparked debate in the AI community by warning that leading companies are racing ahead without adequate safeguards. According to Coxon, advanced AI systems may eventually hack computer systems, transform entire industries, and gain access to real-world power and resources.
Coxon called for AI companies to work more closely together on safety and suggested that slowing the development of the most advanced AI systems may be necessary as governments consider new rules. Senator Bernie Sanders has expressed support for Coxon's concerns and plans to introduce a bill to ban superintelligence and pause AI development.
However, crypto host Laura Shin disagrees with Coxon's views, saying that people have often predicted disaster when new technologies appear. She believes that humans will decide how AI is used and that mistakes are a normal part of developing new technology. In her view, AI could do more good than harm, even though it comes with risks.
Investors may need to focus on revenue, earnings, and cash flow over AI hype as concerns about safety and regulation become increasingly important factors in the industry's growth.
