AI Siphons Marginal Dollar from Crypto Markets: Arthur Hayes

Arthur Hayes, a prominent figure in the crypto space, has shared his views on why Bitcoin's rally is being hindered by AI's marginal capital grab. In an interview, he argued that investors are funneling gains into AI equities, semiconductors, cloud infrastructure, and AI startup fundraising instead of Bitcoin.

According to Hayes, the expansion of central bank balance sheets has not led to a surge in speculative inflows into crypto markets as expected. The usual playbook would suggest that loose monetary policy pushes excess cash into scarce assets, but this hasn't materialized in the crypto market.

Hayes believes that AI capex is now the main competitor for the marginal dollar that once found its way into digital assets. He noted that investors are chasing AI tech equities and the supply chains behind them, leaving Bitcoin and the broader crypto complex starved of speculative inflows.

The most uncomfortable part of Hayes's view is what happens if AI equities crack. Because crypto markets never close and offer instant settlement, they become the go-to source of emergency cash during a stock sell-off. Traders facing margin calls would be forced to dump liquid digital assets first, not because the fundamentals have changed, but because the infrastructure allows it.
