AI Startups Dominate Private Market Valuations Over $1 Trillion
The private market valuations of pre-IPO tech companies have surged past $1 trillion, with AI startups dominating the top spots. According to DeFiLlama data, many companies have seen their valuations more than double in the past year, with Anthropic and OpenAI leading the list.
Anthropic's valuation has reached an estimated $1.38 trillion after a 716.89% one-year jump, while OpenAI follows at about $900.29 billion, up 140.08%. Other AI-involved companies such as DeepSeek, Cognition, Moonshot AI, and Mistral AI have also seen significant gains.
The surge in private valuations mirrors a wider spending boom, with Goldman Sachs Research projecting global AI-related investment to reach $1 trillion in 2026. The public-market wobble has not had the same impact on private valuations, with DeFiLlama's tracker of the 50 largest private companies up 62% year-to-date compared to 8% for the S&P 500.
The eventual IPOs of these companies will have a notable impact on the way investors view other private and public AI enterprises. Investment bankers believe that the first major AI firm to become public will set a landmark valuation for future companies, with Anthropic and OpenAI's upcoming IPO expected to have a significant effect.
