AI Surpasses Quantum Threats to Bitcoin Security
Bitcoin's security is being threatened not by quantum computers, but by advanced artificial intelligence that can find vulnerabilities in its custody stack. The software and hardware used to manage Bitcoin wallets are now at risk of being compromised by AI agents.
A recent disclosure from Coinkite highlighted a bug in their wallet seed generation process, which was caused by a software change in 2021. Although the issue did not affect the functionality of Bitcoin itself, it showed that even cold storage is not immune to security risks.
The custody stack of Bitcoin consists of six layers: trust, observed boundary, seed generation, firmware and builds, reproducibility, transaction construction, signing, hardware, recovery, and surrounding software. Each layer has its own set of vulnerabilities, which can be exploited by AI agents.
One such vulnerability was demonstrated by researchers who used valid signatures to encode a secret into two Bitcoin transaction signatures. This shows that even an air-gapped device is not completely secure.
