AI Threats to DeFi Exceed Those to Bitcoin, Warns Capriole's Charles Edwards
Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, has sounded an alarm about the growing threat to decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols from artificial intelligence (AI). In a recent interview, Edwards warned that AI systems may pose a more immediate and severe security risk than Bitcoin itself. The key reason for this concern is that DeFi platforms rely on complex smart contracts that can be vulnerable to AI-driven attacks.
Edwards pointed to the AI model known as 'Mythos', which has demonstrated its ability to bypass multiple layers of security safeguards in conventional computing environments. He argued that if such breaches are possible in controlled settings, similar incidents could occur across many DeFi protocols.
According to Edwards, the frequency of DeFi hacks has increased significantly over the past 12 months, weighing on the broader crypto industry's reputation and user confidence. While Bitcoin's relatively simpler codebase and proof-of-work consensus may offer some inherent protection, DeFi platforms face a more diverse and evolving threat landscape.
Edwards also noted that massive capital inflows into the AI sector are drawing funds away from cryptocurrencies broadly, including Bitcoin. This shift in capital allocation could dampen price momentum and reduce liquidity in digital asset markets.
