Akash Network Challenges Hyperscaler Monopoly with Decentralized Cloud Computing
The Akash Network is an attempt to break the monopoly held by Amazon, Microsoft, and Google in cloud computing. These three companies control about two-thirds of all cloud computing spending worldwide.
Akash allows anyone with spare computing hardware to sell their capacity to those who need it, creating a decentralized marketplace. The protocol has facilitated over $172 million in annualized compute demand, making the timing of its emergence particularly relevant.
The Akash Network uses a reverse auction mechanism, where tenants post what they are willing to pay and providers bid on the work. This process allows prices to trend toward the cost of running hardware plus a thin margin, resulting in costs 3x to 10x below equivalent AWS on-demand rates for comparable CPU workloads.
The AKT token governs the network, secures staking, and is used to settle payments. It has three distinct functions: as a staking token, settlement denomination, and governance token. The token's value is directly linked to the economics of the compute market.
