Alberta and Ontario Diverge on Online Gambling Regulation
Alberta and Ontario are taking different approaches to regulating their online gambling markets. The two provinces have chosen distinct models for overseeing private operators, despite both allowing licensed sites to operate.
Ontario opened its market in April 2022 with a similar structure. However, the details differ between the two provinces. Alberta's regulator, AGLC, is responsible for registration, setting standards, and compliance. In contrast, the Alberta iGaming Corporation handles commercial agreements and anti-money laundering coordination.
Ontario's framework has served as a reference point for other provinces weighing private licensing. The AGCO issues certificates of registration to each internet gaming operator and sets the Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming. iGO conducts and manages the market through private operators, executing operating agreements with registered brands.
