Algorand 5.0 Upgrade Boosts Developer Capabilities with Larger Apps and Fees
Algorand has released its latest upgrade, version 5.0, on August 22, 2026. This update brings significant enhancements to the network's functionality, particularly for developers. The most notable improvement is the doubling of maximum app sizes from 8 KB to 16 KB, allowing developers to deploy more complex decentralized applications.
Transaction limits have also been expanded, and a new dynamic 'usage-based' fee model has been introduced for larger transactions. This model accounts for the total resource consumption of a transaction group, including inner transactions generated by application calls.
The upgrade aims to support more complex dApps and streamline the user experience. Developers can now modify an app's global state schema, which was previously immutable. The update also includes the implementation of AVM v13 and the poseidon2 hash function, enhancing both security and functionality.
