Algorand Enables Programmatic Payments with x402 Upgrade
Algorand's (ALGO) infrastructure has been upgraded to support x402 payments, a protocol that enables programmatic payments directly over the web. This development allows developers to monetize APIs and digital services through crypto micropayments.
The x402 flow is straightforward but powerful: when a client attempts to access a gated resource, the server responds with an HTTP 402 status code, specifying the payment requirements. The client then signs a payment transaction and resubmits the request with proof of payment, which is verified by the facilitator before the resource becomes available.
Algorand's sub-cent transaction fees and instant finality make it uniquely suited to x402's demands. Developers can price services in USDC or ALGO and gate access at the most granular level, such as per API call or file download.
