Algorand Enables x402 Payments: A Breakthrough in Crypto Micropayments
Algorand has released a guide to integrating x402 payments, a protocol that enables programmatic crypto micropayments. The x402 flow works by having clients sign payment transactions and resubmit requests with proof of payment, which is then verified and settled on-chain by the GoPlausible facilitator.
This eliminates the need for accounts, subscriptions, or API keys, making it particularly suited for micropayments and machine-to-machine transactions. Algorand's infrastructure, characterized by low fees and instant finality, ensures that even fractional payments don't encounter prohibitive costs or delays.
The guide highlights a practical use case: monetizing ordinary APIs through per-request payments. This enables new revenue streams for existing services, such as charging a few cents per query for an API providing weather data.
