Algorand Leads in Quantum-Resistant Account Deployment, but XRP Takes Broader Approach
Algorand has made significant strides in deploying quantum-resistant accounts on its mainnet. The platform went live with native Falcon-1024 accounts in August, and early figures show that about 1,800 such accounts have been created, along with over 1.2 million transactions.
However, Algorand is not fully quantum-ready yet, as it still relies on Ed25519 for many of its network operations. Ripple's XRP Ledger, on the other hand, is taking a more comprehensive approach to addressing quantum risk, with Project Eleven auditing validators, custody, networking, and wallets in addition to account signatures.
XRPL's RegularKey feature allows users to rotate signing keys without abandoning their address, which may be a crucial aspect if post-quantum signatures prove bulky. The mainnet still runs on secp256k1 and Ed25519, while AlphaNet has been testing ML-DSA.
Both Algorand and XRP Ledger are in the process of upgrading to quantum-resistant systems, but their approaches differ in scope and timeline. Quantum risk is a significant concern, as it allows attackers to copy public keys today and wait for a large-scale attack later.
