Altcoin Interest Hits Two-Year Low as Bitcoin Season Dominates Market
Altcoin interest has hit a two-year low according to data from sentiment platform Santiment. Social media mentions of altcoins have dropped significantly, with online discussion around non-Bitcoin assets at its lowest point in two years.
The trend aligns with broader market data showing investors focusing on Bitcoin over the past several weeks. CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index currently reads 34 out of 100, placing the market in 'Bitcoin Season'. This index is based on the performance of the top 100 altcoins relative to Bitcoin over the past 90 days.
Historically, low altcoin interest has been a bullish indicator, with Santiment noting that moments like these have preceded rallies. The total crypto market capitalization has fallen nearly 43% since October, sitting at $2.45 trillion. Despite this contraction, investors are optimistic about the potential for altcoins to gain traction once Bitcoin's momentum slows.
Bitcoin surged 7.51% over the past 24 hours, supported by compressed volatility, stronger ETF flows, and a narrowed Coinbase discount. MN Trading Capital founder Michaël van de Poppe said that altcoins could begin gaining traction once Bitcoin stalls, describing it as a 'great rotation'.
