Altcoin Leverage Surpasses Bitcoin: Is Market Setting Up for Crash?
The cryptocurrency market is experiencing an interesting dynamic, where Bitcoin's spot-backed rally may be hiding an altcoin leverage trap last seen in 2025. According to Coinalyze data, altcoin perpetual futures carried more open interest than Bitcoin's on September 6, marking the first such flip since December 2024.
Neoclassic Capital Co-Founder and Managing Partner Michael Bucella described Bitcoin's advance as a healthy rotation, initially driven by short covering. However, spot demand and rising call-option skew have since taken over as futures positioning eased.
Zcash has been driving most of the shift, with its derivatives book swelling to an all-time high near $2.4 billion during its decade-high rally. As Zcash's token broke higher, short sellers absorbed roughly $34 million in forced closures.
