Altcoin Open Interest Overtakes Bitcoin in Derivatives Market
The altcoin perpetual futures market has surpassed Bitcoin's for the first time since December 2024, according to Coinalyze data. This marks a significant shift in the derivatives landscape, with aggregate open interest in altcoins now exceeding that of Bitcoin.
Bitcoin's perpetual open interest remained steady at around $23.9 billion on September 6, accounting for approximately 37% of the total tracked positions. Meanwhile, Zcash (ZEC) saw its open interest surge to about $2.4 billion as it rallied above $1,000 in early September.
The crossover between Bitcoin and altcoins is not a definitive indicator of market direction or sentiment. Open interest measures outstanding derivatives contracts, but does not reveal whether traders are bullish or bearish. Funding rates provide additional context, with positive funding indicating long positions paying shorts, and negative funding suggesting stronger demand for bearish exposure.
