Altcoin Outperformance Narrative Fails to Hold Water
Contrary to popular narrative, most large-cap altcoins barely moved during a recent period when Bitcoin was essentially flat. A comparison by trader Denis Liu shows that over a 17-day stretch in August and September, Ethereum fell 1%, XRP dropped 2%, Dogecoin declined 2%, Tron lost 1%, and Cardano was down 3%. The largest altcoins, with the exception of Solana, BNB, and Chainlink, remained within a few percentage points of their starting levels.
Liu's comparison suggests that these tokens move higher when Bitcoin rallies but surrender gains when the leading cryptocurrency stalls. 'A coin that only moves louder than Bitcoin is still following Bitcoin,' he wrote in his September 9 post.
However, analyst Matthew Hyland believes that more than 100 top altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin across multiple timeframes, citing macro-risk indicators and record altcoin futures open interest as evidence. The two perspectives address fundamentally different questions: Liu's price check measures what has actually happened over a specific recent window, while Hyland is focused on a potential future expansion of altcoin strength.
The performance divergence among major altcoins during Bitcoin's flat stretch highlights the uneven nature of the current market. While a select group posted meaningful gains, the broader large-cap cohort largely tracked Bitcoin's sideways action.
