Altcoin Rotation Driven by Bitcoin's Low Volatility
Bitcoin's price swings have become so muted that traders are turning to altcoins in search of bigger gains. The largest cryptocurrency has entered a period of low volatility, and while this doesn't mean investors are avoiding risk altogether, they're redirecting it towards smaller tokens with higher potential for percentage increases.
A range-bound Bitcoin creates problems for leveraged desks and active funds, as the payoff from catching a two percent move is no longer enough to justify the risks. This impulse has shifted to altcoins that can still produce double-digit moves in a single session.
Derivatives desks are also adjusting their pricing due to the low volatility, with option sellers becoming more willing to hold short gamma positions and market makers widening or narrowing spreads based on expected breakout timing. This makes the next meaningful Bitcoin move feel more loaded, as much of the market is positioned for the quiet to continue.
However, this rotation comes with a cost: altcoin liquidity is thinner, making trades reversible faster than they appear. Bitcoin's lack of confirmation also means rallies in smaller assets often have short shelf lives.
