Altcoin Rotation Sparks Warning Signs for Bitcoin
Bitcoin has been rangebound for the past 20 trading sessions, stuck between $77,100 and $81,300. This tight range is causing concern among traders as it may indicate a weakening of the medium-term uptrend.
A break above $81,300 could push Bitcoin towards $86,500, but if it drops below $77,100, it could weaken the trend.
The subdued volatility in Bitcoin has created a different environment across the broader crypto market. All 29 largest liquid crypto pairs gained between September 1 and September 8, delivering a median return of 10.2% compared to Bitcoin's 1.4% gain.
XRP climbed 4.9%, Solana advanced 3.4%, while Dogecoin rose 10.3%. Ethereum also rose 2.8% during this period. The rotation pushed Bitcoin dominance down from 60.4% to 59.2% since the beginning of September.
The combination of sideways Bitcoin prices, neutral funding and rising altcoin leverage has historically created favorable conditions for speculative capital to move further out on the risk curve. However, a similar setup emerged in December 2024 when altcoin open interest overtook Bitcoin's, leading to a market decline that triggered $1.7 billion in liquidations in a single day.
