Altcoin Season Index Misfires as Altcoins Gain Momentum
The Altcoin Season Index is flashing signals that suggest it's time for Bitcoin to dominate, but recent technicals tell a different story. The index is set to close August at around 29 points, just four points away from full-blown Bitcoin season, but this is down 56% from its early-August peak of 67.
This suggests that altcoin momentum has weakened significantly over the month. However, the technicals show a different picture. The total market cap excluding Bitcoin (TOTAL2) has gained over 17% during the same period, while Bitcoin dominance increased by just over 2%. This means that funds are flowing into altcoins at a much higher rate than suggested by the Altcoin Season Index.
The market seems to be going against the Altcoin Season Index. Technical signs point to an altcoin rotation being near, with capital already beginning to rotate into altcoins despite the index flashing Bitcoin season. Macro FUD is also weighing on Bitcoin, with Brent crude jumping over $90 as U.S.-Iran tensions escalate.
This adds pressure to Bitcoin's setup, especially with trading volumes still near three-year lows. Binance spot volumes dropped from $198 billion to roughly $44 billion, while Gate and Bybit saw roughly 70% declines. This weak participation suggests that Bitcoin still lacks strong conviction despite its 30%+ August rally.
