Altcoin Surge Hides Fragile Crypto Rally
August was a surprisingly good month for crypto markets, with many altcoins outperforming Bitcoin. According to CryptoRank data, the combined market capitalization of top-100 altcoins grew by 26.5% in August, outpacing Bitcoin's growth.
The average altcoin gain was 24.5%, and even when excluding outliers, smaller and mid-sized tokens still managed a respectable 17.1% increase.
However, beneath the surface of rising prices lies a more nuanced story. While active loans across major protocols increased by 30% to $26.1B in August, Bitcoin's rapid price surge from $63K to $81.5K led to profit-taking and heavy sell-offs. The U.S. demand for crypto also turned positive before disappearing, leaving the rally feeling fragile.
The use of leverage, as indicated by funding rates hitting a yearly high, adds another layer of complexity to the market's dynamics.
