Altcoins Finally Catch Up as Bitcoin Dominance Eases
Bitcoin closed out its strongest stretch of 2026 in August, gaining about 28% for the month and reaching a price above $80,000. This is still roughly 37% below its record high of $126,198 set in October 2025.
The whole crypto market has been rising, with the total capitalization near $2.75 trillion. However, Bitcoin's dominance climbed to around 61% during the week before easing back to roughly 59%, indicating that altcoins are participating but not leading the market.
Five altcoins were selected for their potential: XRP, Ethereum, Solana, Chainlink, and Zcash. Each of these coins underperformed Bitcoin over the past week or month and has an identifiable catalyst for a price increase. They also have sufficient liquidity to enter and exit without moving the market against themselves.
BNB is the largest altcoin still trailing Bitcoin, despite its clean fundamental profile. Its quarterly burn mechanism removes supply on a fixed schedule regardless of sentiment, but it's tied to the fortunes of Binance and regulatory posture towards it.
Hedera (HBAR) has a wide gap between its institutional footprint and chart performance. It has gained regulatory clarity and live US spot ETF status, but scheduled treasury releases add dilution pressure, absorbing demand that would otherwise show up as price.
Avalanche (AVAX) is down roughly 70% over the past year, but its ecosystem activity has diverged from the price. Aave's V4 deployment on Avalanche and Stable Vaults product may route institutional-adjacent flow through Avalanche rather than around it.
