Altcoins Overtake Bitcoin in Open Interest for First Time Since December 2024
The altcoin market has surpassed Bitcoin in open interest for the first time since December 2024, according to Coinalyze data. This shift indicates that traders are increasing their exposure across the broader altcoin market, with Zcash derivatives activity reaching a record $2.4 billion in early September.
Altcoin perpetual futures open interest has moved above Bitcoin's for the first time since 2024, as the market capitalization of cryptocurrencies outside the top 10 rises above $200 billion. The increase in altcoin open interest also creates a potential source of additional volatility due to the high leverage involved.
The growth is not limited to Zcash; rising futures positioning across several altcoins has contributed to the broader shift in open interest. However, the challenge for altcoins is to maintain their price momentum while open interest remains elevated, as a sudden reversal could trigger widespread liquidations and quickly unwind the leverage that helped drive the rally.
