Altcoins Surge $215 Billion in 3 Days, Trump's Comments Spark Rally
The altcoin market has experienced a significant recovery in recent days, with Total2, the measure of altcoins excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum, surging by $215 billion between August 19 and 22. This marks a 24% increase in just three days, pushing Total2 above the $1 trillion mark for the first time in weeks.
Mid cap and small cap tokens led the gains, outpacing larger altcoins. According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, these smaller coins rose the fastest during this period. This pattern is typical of early altcoin rallies, where speculative capital chases smaller tokens before rotating into blue-chip alternatives.
Technical indicators also suggest a bullish trend. The 200-day moving average has flipped, with about 56% of Binance-listed altcoins now trading above their long-term average, up from around 80-85% last November.
The rally has been fueled by Donald Trump's comments on August 19, where he expressed support for the United States buying large amounts of Bitcoin and urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act. Strong inflows into altcoin ETFs also contributed to the surge, with nearly $90 million pouring in during the week ending August 21.
