Altcoins Surge as US Treasury Eases Bond Buybacks
The cryptocurrency market experienced a broad-based rally over the past 24 hours, with altcoins posting significant gains as Bitcoin climbed above $77,000 and held its level. Zcash led the charge, surging 47.1% to $827.02 at its peak before settling around 35% higher. Other notable performers included Bitcoin Cash, which jumped 31.4% to $299.49, and Cardano, Dogecoin, XRP, Chainlink, Stellar, and Hyperliquid, all of which posted double-digit gains.
Bernstein strategist Gautam Chhugani attributed the move to the U.S. Treasury's decision to expand its long-term bond buyback program from $2 billion to $4 billion per session, easing financial conditions and historically triggering a positive response in Bitcoin. The shift in liquidity dynamics may have reduced selling pressure on crypto assets, supporting the broader market rally.
However, for the current upswing to evolve into a durable altcoin season, trading volumes and investor demand will need to remain robust beyond a single 24-hour window. Chhugani noted that the Treasury's expanded buyback program represents a tangible easing of financial conditions, but its durability will depend on broader macroeconomic forces.
