American Bankers Association Backs Crypto Legislation with Caveats
The American Bankers Association (ABA) has publicly endorsed the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act), a bill aimed at clarifying the digital asset market structure. The ABA's support comes with conditions, specifically to address concerns that stablecoin yields could pull deposits away from community banks.
According to Rob Nichols, president and CEO of the ABA, the association is not fundamentally opposed to legislation aimed at regulating digital assets, but wants to ensure that community banks are protected. He described the fixes needed as 'tiny' and 'surgical', indicating that the ABA is open to tweaking the bill rather than killing it.
The CLARITY Act has already cleared the Senate Banking Committee with a 15-9 vote and an updated version was released on July 22, reflecting collaborative work among senators. Nichols has indicated he's in active discussions with multiple senators about the amendments the ABA wants included.
