AmericanFortress Proposes Quantum-Safe Wallet Security Without Changing Addresses
AmericanFortress has proposed a novel solution to protect cryptocurrency wallets from future quantum attacks. The company's post-quantum cryptography scheme, outlined in a technical paper on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, aims to safeguard wallet security without requiring users to move funds or change wallet addresses.
The proposal centers on cryptographic proofs tied to a wallet's original seed phrase, which are verified by participating nodes while users continue to sign transactions using their existing keys. This approach preserves the user's existing wallet identity and adds a layer of quantum resistance.
AmericanFortress's method is notable because many post-quantum proposals involve changing the cryptographic scheme end-to-end, which can imply key rotation or new address generation. The company claims its approach is compatible with the broader seed-based ecosystem, suggesting it could be integrated without asking users to reorganize their custody setup.
The proposal comes at a time when the industry is actively planning for a potential migration away from today's elliptic-curve cryptography. Analysts have warned that large cryptographic ecosystems may need time to adapt, citing Bloomberg's analysis estimating up to $470 billion in Bitcoin could become vulnerable under sufficiently capable quantum machines.
