Americans Skeptical of Crypto in Retirement Plans

Share

A recent survey by the National Institute on Retirement Security found that nearly eight in ten Americans view investing in digital assets through workplace retirement plans as risky.

Among the respondents, a significant 77% considered crypto investments in retirement plans to be high-risk. In fact, 46% of those surveyed described crypto investing as 'very risky', while another 53% expressed opposition to employers offering crypto as an investment option in retirement plans.

This sentiment may seem counterintuitive given the growing interest in cryptocurrencies and President Donald Trump's executive order in August 2025 to expand access for 401(k) retirement plans to alternative assets, including crypto. The U.S. Department of Labor subsequently proposed related rules in March 2026.
