Americans Wary of Crypto in Retirement Plans: 77% View It as Risky
A new survey from the National Institute on Retirement Security reveals that nearly eight in ten Americans view cryptocurrency as a risky investment within workplace retirement plans. The survey, released on August 26, found that 77% of respondents consider crypto to be a high-risk proposition, with 46% labeling it 'very risky'.
This sentiment is reflected in the fact that more than half (53%) of Americans oppose their employers offering crypto as an investment option. The survey also found that 80% of Americans believe the country is facing a retirement crisis, up from 67% who felt this way in 2020.
The Department of Labor has recently revisited its guidelines on alternative investments, including digital assets, following an executive order issued by the Trump administration in August 2025. The proposed rule aims to create a safe harbor for fiduciaries evaluating alternative assets like crypto, but it remains to be seen whether this will have any impact on Americans' views.
