Anthropic Sued Over Alleged Copyright Infringement in AI Music Training

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in the US Northern District of California's federal court, alleging that the AI company has been using copyrighted music to train its Claude AI models.

The complaint claims that Anthropic has been downloading and distributing millions of copyrighted works without permission, including songs from MusixMatch and LyricFind. According to the lawsuit, Anthropic is seeking to develop and train its AI models using this vast library of copyrighted material.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages for each work, with a maximum of $150,000 per piece, as well as an additional $25,000 for each instance where copyright data was removed. The lawsuit also names Anthropic's co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann as individual defendants, alleging that they have used BitTorrent to download millions of pirated books.
