Anthropic Sued Over Misleading Claude Max Pricing Promises
A proposed class-action lawsuit has been filed against Anthropic PBC, alleging that the company misled subscribers about the actual usage limits of its Claude Max subscription tiers.
The complaint, filed on June 14 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, centers around Anthropic's naming conventions, which imply a multiplier over the standard Pro plan. Max 5x should deliver five times the Pro plan's usage, while Max 20x should deliver twenty times.
However, according to plaintiff Karl Kahn, the reality falls well short of those numbers. The Max 5x plan allegedly delivers roughly 3.5 times the Pro plan's usage, while the Max 20x plan reportedly lands somewhere between 6 and 8 times, not 20.
Kahn argues that Anthropic's marketing implies a significant value proposition between the two Max tiers, but claims the additional hours are marginal. He cites internal communications from July 2025, which outlined usage caps directly contradicting the company's public advertising.
