Apple Sued Over Fake Bitcoin Wallet Apps on App Store
Three Apple customers are suing the company over an alleged failure to prevent fake Bitcoin wallet apps from appearing in its App Store. The plaintiffs claim they collectively lost more than $1.8 million after downloading a fraudulent Sparrow Wallet app, which impersonated the legitimate cryptocurrency storage application.
The fake app harvested the seed phrases of the victims, allowing scammers to drain their Bitcoin holdings. This type of theft is particularly devastating because once a seed phrase is compromised, it cannot be reset or cancelled, making the funds irreversibly lost.
Apple has defended its App Store review process, stating that apps impersonating others violate its guidelines and that it takes swift action to remove them. However, this case could challenge Apple's long-standing claim that its exclusive control provides users with a uniquely safe environment.
