Apple's App Store Accused of Promoting Fake Bitcoin Wallets, $1.8M Stolen
Apple's App Store has been accused of promoting fake Bitcoin wallets that stole $1.8 million from three users, raising questions about its screening process.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple failed to remove applications impersonating Sparrow Wallet despite warnings from the developer and other reports of malicious wallet apps.
Craig Raw, the founder of Sparrow, had been flagging unauthorized mobile versions of his wallet since early 2024. Despite this, variants carrying the Sparrow name continued to surface inside the App Store over the following year.
The plaintiffs claim that Apple did more than distribute the app - it ranked the Sparrow impersonator and surfaced it within cryptocurrency app collections, potentially increasing its credibility and reach.
Apple has removed fraudulent Sparrow apps and terminated the developer accounts responsible for them. However, the incident highlights the challenges legitimate developers face in stopping impersonations and Apple's struggles to distinguish between genuine and fake wallet developers.
