Arbitrum Expands Developer Access with WASM Support in Arbitrum Stylus

Arbitrum has expanded developer access to its ecosystem with the introduction of WASM (WebAssembly) support in Arbitrum Stylus. This move marks a significant shift from relying on Solidity contracts, which currently comprise 20,000 developers. The inclusion of Rust and C++ contracts brings in 3 million developers who already use these languages, making it easier for them to build on the platform.

The addition of WASM support is built upon the Nitro upgrade that occurred last August, allowing validators to run Geth and prove fraud in WebAssembly. Arbitrum refers to this paradigm as EVM+, which combines the Ethereum Virtual Machine with the WASM VM for specialized tasks. The EVM remains in place for standard transactions.

The cargo-stylus CLI toolkit allows engineers to manage, compile, and deploy contracts using familiar tools. Arbitrum Stylus supports AssemblyScript, a TypeScript-like language, and Zig, which produces small binaries. This expansion is additive, as developers can choose between Solidity and WASM languages depending on their specific needs.

The performance benefits of WASM are substantial, with efficiency varying by task. For heavy computations, Stylus reduces costs by 10x, while memory savings for AI applications reach 100x. The Rust implementation of the Poseidon hash function is 18 times cheaper than its Solidity equivalent, and Ed25519 signature verification is 75% less expensive.

However, ERC20 contracts do not gain the same advantages, with deploy costs 11 times higher in Stylus compared to Solidity. Minting and transfer tasks also incur additional gas costs due to their reliance on standard transactions. Despite these limitations, Arbitrum Stylus has already seen adoption from various projects, including Renegade's MPC scheme and Superposition's Longtail AMM.
